African Transition Acceleration Fund (ATAF)

DESCRIPTION

ATAF is AIIM’s dedicated blended finance fund focused on early-stage, asset-heavy energy transition infrastructure across Africa.

The Fund targets an underserved segment of Africa’s climate finance value chain, investing in development platforms and scale-up businesses across three thematic decarbonisation verticals: clean electrons, clean molecules and sustainable transport. These encompass technologies and infrastructure including renewable generation, energy storage and transmission; biofuels, biogas and other clean molecules; and e-mobility and associated charging infrastructure.

ATAF provides catalytic development and scale-up capital to businesses and projects that can help accelerate private-sector participation in Africa’s energy transition. Its focus is on nurturing and scaling commercially viable energy transition infrastructure businesses while helping unlock larger flows of follow-on capital.

ATAF is targeting USD250 million and incorporates a 25% first-loss junior equity tranche designed to provide downside protection to senior investors while enabling investment in earlier-stage opportunities. The Fund achieved a USD100 million first close in Q1 2026.

Sustainability and impact are embedded in the strategy, with a focus on measurable climate outcomes, accelerating investment into the energy transition and supporting the development of commercially viable climate businesses across Africa.
